Discipleship Counseling
(unless otherwise cited, all scripture references are from the English Standard Version)

Bear one another's burdens, and thus fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2, NAS77)

And we proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, that we may present every man complete in Christ. And for this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me. (Colossians 1:28-29, NAS77)

What is discipleship counseling?

Also called “biblical counseling,” discipleship counseling is simply a series of lessons and discussions designed just for you, along with reading and practical work outside of class, that can change your life. Because God’s word has real answers to the real problems in our lives, our purpose is to glorify God by bringing His hope and solutions to those who need them.

Psalm 119:24  Your testimonies are my delight; they are my counselors.

2 Peter 1:3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,

2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

Who may need discipleship counseling?

You may need discipleship counseling if, for example, you are--
-- upset by problems with emotions, relationships, finances, family matters, or sin.
-- having problems that affect your health, your marriage, your children, or your work.
-- angry with God or are beginning to doubt God’s perfections (His love, mercy, justice, etc.).
-- addicted to a substance or have a damaging behavioral habit.
-- overwhelmed by problems and you see no solution.

How does discipleship counseling work?

Discipleship counseling at Capshaw Baptist Church is based entirely on the Bible. Our pastors and discipleship counselors are not trained or licensed psychologists, psychiatrists, or mental health professionals, and do not use the methods or theories of psychology or psychiatry. We know that our Creator, who understands us completely (Ps 139), has given to us all knowledge that is needed to live an abundant life (John 10:10) on earth with joy (Gal 5:22) and contentment (Php 4:11). Our discipleship counseling provides scriptural guidance for the "issues" of life, but more importantly it seeks to establish or build strong faith in God and biblical attitudes that are essential for dealing with life's difficulties. We seek to strengthen your understanding of truth as it relates to your circumstances, and we seek to connect you more firmly than ever to God's grace.

Are discipleship counselors qualified to give effective counsel?

Discipleship counselors work under the supervision of our pastors and have the confidence of our pastors. Our pastors and discipleship counselors have trained and studied to learn discipleship counseling techniques. They are experienced in helping people apply God’s wisdom to their lives, and they continue to study and learn.

More importantly, scripture teaches that all Christians are able to give godly counsel to each other. In Romans 15:14, writing to the entire church in Rome, Paul wrote, "And concerning you, my brethren, I myself also am convinced that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and able also to admonish one another." (NAS77) The Greek word translated as "admonish" is noutheteo and means to gently caution, reprove, admonish, warn, and instruct. This is discipleship counseling. Just as Jesus is the Wonderful Counselor (Isaiah 9:6) who counseled us to have faith and trust in God, to obey God, and to love one-another, God commands Christians to counsel each other and bear one another’s burdens--which is love in action. Among many others, read Matthew 18:15, Galatians 6:1-2, and 1 Thessalonians 5:14.

Who may come for discipleship counseling, and how much does it cost?

Capshaw Baptist offers discipleship counseling, without charge, to member families of the church and to nonmembers who live in our vicinity. You may attend counseling by yourself, with your spouse, or with your family (husband and wife with their children). We have a limited number of pastors and discipleship counselors, but within our resources we will make every effort to provide timely assistance to you.

How do I obtain discipleship counseling?

If you would like to begin discipleship counseling, please call or visit the church office and make your request.  If you have questions about Discipleship Counseling, you may write to vic.cbc@gmail.com.  Our office will help you contact a discipleship counselor. At our discretion you will see either a pastor or a trained lay counselor. You may download the Informed Consent Form and Personal Data forms, fill them out, seal them in an envelope and, if possible, bring them to the church office at least two days before your appointment. Otherwise, please give them to your counselor at the first meeting.  It is okay if you would rather not fill out the Personal Data form before the first meeting.

The Informed Consent form, that you may download at the Downloadable Resources page provides additional important information about our discipleship counseling ministry.
